Notes on the video: Thanks to the lighting of Rogers Arena, my colleague Amalie Benjamin appeared extremely dark. To compensate for the poor lighting — both by the arena and my small light fixture — I tried to use Final Cut Pro’s 3-way color corrector to lighten her up. The danger in using this tool is that in all likelihood the video will become awash. That’s why lighting is so important to video. In fact, it’s almost as important as audio. So needless to say, I was not happy with the way she was lit. I’m going to have to start carrying more equipment.

/ June 11, 2011Generally, when I use the color corrector, I only mess with the mids. I feel like I have more control there.
Do you guys have portable lighting available that you can connect to the camera through a bracket or shoe mount? (Like this: http://www.amazon.com/Sima-SL-20LX-Ultra-Bright-Video/dp/B000WKW69Q/ref=pd_cp_p_1)
It’s not a be-all solution, but it would cut back on how much tweaking you’d need to do in Color Corrector later.

/ June 11, 2011Yes. It’s a rinky dink light though which I was using on the shot. The arena was just super dark. Add to the fact that the ice ruins the white balance and you’re looking at a situation in which you literally need more lighting alternatives to compensate for the contrasts.
